Most people think the cost is in big items: camera, lens, lights, and microphones. That is partly true. But small accessories are dangerous. They look harmless at the shop counter. Then the bill comes.

One thing beginners underestimate is accessories. Mic stands, XLR cables, tripods, and basic microphones may not look expensive individually, but together they quickly become ₹20,000 to ₹30,000. In our case, one invoice for stands, cables, tripods, and microphones came to ₹23,100 including GST.

The GST part also matters. This invoice included CGST and SGST of ₹3,523.72.

That is not a small side detail. If you are building a business, clean billing helps with accounts, warranty records, depreciation, and proof of ownership. More on GST later, because this is one area where people try to save money and end up taking unnecessary risk.

Also, three tripods may sound too many to a beginner. It is not. A commercial video podcast setup often needs one front camera, one side angle, and one wide or host angle. Once you start shooting reels, testimonials, interviews, and corporate videos, extra tripods never stay idle for long.

Actual Invoice Example: Dry Cabinet for Camera Gear

We also bought a dry cabinet:

A dry cabinet is not the first thing people think about, but if you are buying cameras and lenses in India, especially in humid cities like Mumbai, it is a smart investment. We bought a Photron Electronics dry cabinet for ₹4,500 including GST.

Mumbai humidity is not kind to camera gear. Fungus on lenses is a real issue. If you are spending lakhs on cameras and lenses, saving ₹4,500 by skipping a dry cabinet makes no sense.

This is one of those purchases that does not improve the look of the studio, so beginners ignore it. Clients will not see it. Your Instagram reel will not show it.

Your lens will thank you later.

Lighting and Background Setup: Our Market Quote Was Around ₹51,800

Lighting is where a podcast studio starts looking expensive.

In our lighting and background purchase list, the quote came to around ₹51,800. This included lights, softboxes or octas, stands, RGB lights, brackets, a backdrop stand, and green cloth background. This is why I always say: lighting is not one item. It is a full system.

A good podcast look comes from layers of light. Face light. Fill light. Back light. Background light. Practical lights in the frame. RGB glow on the wall. Sometimes one light just to separate the guest from the background.

Can you start with two basic lights? Yes.

Will it look like a premium rental studio? Usually no.

This setup is for creators, small business owners, solo founders, internal teams, coaches, trainers, or anyone who wants to record without building a full rental studio.

This setup can help you start, but it may not look premium enough for a commercial rental studio.

For a home podcast, this is fine. You can sit in a small room, use a clean background, add soft light, and record decent audio. If your content is strong, the audience will forgive a simple setup.

Commercial clients are different.

They pay for confidence. They want to walk in and feel that the studio is ready. They do not want to adjust the light themselves, check audio levels, or wonder why the video angle looks flat. They want a finished experience.

That is why commercial setup cost is higher.

Must-Have Equipment for a Commercial Podcast Studio

For a commercial podcast studio, equipment is not only about recording. It is about reliability, comfort, repeat bookings, and how premium the video looks.

And please do not ignore backup.

Video files are heavy. One 4K multi-camera podcast can eat storage quickly. If you shoot several sessions a week, file management becomes a business problem. SSDs, hard drives, cloud backup, naming systems, and transfer policies should be planned early.

Two Types of Cameras You Can Use

Option 1: Mirrorless / DSLR Cameras

Best for:

Mirrorless and DSLR cameras can give beautiful output. The image looks richer, the background blur looks clean, and clients feel they are getting a premium shoot.

Problems:

Before buying, check the actual use case. A camera that is great for wedding reels or photos may be frustrating for podcasts.

Option 2: Camcorders / Video-Focused Cameras

Best for:

Camcorders do not always look as cinematic as mirrorless cameras, but they solve one big problem: long recording.

So which one should you buy?

For a premium studio, mirrorless cameras usually look better. For long corporate recordings or event-style content, video-first cameras can be safer. For a rental studio, I would rather have slightly less cinematic footage than a camera that stops mid-conversation.

Important Camera Warning: 30-Minute Recording Limit

Before buying any camera for podcasting, check whether it can record continuously for 1 to 2 hours. Many cameras, especially photo-first cameras, have recording limits. Some stop around 30 minutes due to heat, file-size limitations, battery management, product segmentation, or older camera and camcorder classification rules.

Budget full-frame cameras can look attractive because they give premium image quality at a lower price. For example, cameras like Nikon Z5 may look tempting, but before buying any camera for podcasting, check recording limit, overheating, HDMI output, autofocus, 4K crop, and power options.

Nikon’s own online documentation for the Z5 lists 29 minutes 59 seconds as the maximum recording time for several video modes, and Nikon support also says selected Z-series models normally have a 29 minute 59 second single-movie limit. Newer creator-focused cameras can be different, so do not assume every camera behaves the same. Always check the exact model before paying.

Use this checklist before buying any camera for a podcast studio:

The 30-minute issue is not a small technical point. It can ruin a paid shoot.

Imagine a guest is sharing a strong story. The host is in flow. The camera silently stops. Nobody notices for ten minutes.

Painful.

That is why I would not buy any camera for podcasting without checking real continuous recording performance first.

Where Should You Buy Podcast Studio Equipment?

You have three common options: online marketplaces, specialist websites, and offline camera/audio stores.

Each has a place.

Online Websites

Amazon can be cheaper if you check properly. Flipkart and camera websites may have offers. Websites like Design Info may give 1 to 2 percent extra discount. But after shipping and support, a local store can sometimes be better.

Why? Because once the product value crosses ₹50,000 or ₹1 lakh, support matters.

Amazon

Amazon can be cheaper if you try properly, especially during sales or bank offers. But for cameras, lenses, microphones, and expensive gear, check the seller, warranty type, return policy, and GST invoice. A small saving is not worth it if warranty becomes difficult later.

Also check whether the seller is authorized or trusted. Read recent reviews, not only star ratings. See whether buyers received proper invoices. Check return rules carefully.

Amazon is good. But do not blindly buy expensive gear at midnight just because the price dropped.

That ₹2,000 saving can become a ₹20,000 headache.

Offline Camera and Audio Stores

Personally, I found stores useful. You can negotiate, check the product physically, compare alternatives, and get guidance. For expensive cameras and lenses, it also helps to have a real store contact if something goes wrong.

Offline stores are also useful when you are buying multiple items together. Camera, lens, tripod, memory card, mic stand, cable, softbox, light stand. Bundle negotiation works better in person.

Another advantage: you may get practical advice.

A good seller will tell you, “Don’t buy this for long recording,” or “This light stand is weak,” or “This microphone needs a better interface.” Online listings rarely warn you like that.

Of course, not every shop gives honest advice. Compare. Ask questions. Take written quotes. Check GST details.

GST Invoice vs Non-GST Invoice: My Honest Advice

This section is important.

Many people buying camera gear in India will hear this question: “GST bill chahiye ya without GST?”

It sounds tempting. The seller may say you can save money if you skip GST billing.

Be careful.

Non-GST Invoice Does Not Really Save 18 Percent

Many stores may offer non-GST billing and make it sound like you are saving 18 percent. But practically, the discount is often closer to 5 percent, not the full 18 percent. For a business, this is usually not worth the risk.

For a podcast studio, your gear is part of your business. Cameras, lenses, microphones, mixers, monitors, lighting, hard drives, and computers are not random shopping items. They are assets.

So treat them like assets.

Why I Suggest Avoiding Non-GST Billing

I would suggest avoiding non-GST invoices for cameras, lenses, microphones, mixers, and expensive electronics. If a warranty issue comes, the service center may ask for a proper GST invoice. Without that, you may have to repair the camera outside, which is not worth the risk.

A proper tax invoice also keeps your records cleaner. Under GST invoice rules, a tax invoice from a registered supplier contains details like supplier name, GSTIN, invoice number, invoice date, recipient details where applicable, item description, tax value, and tax amount. That paperwork is boring until something goes wrong. Then it becomes very useful.

Wall Panels, Furniture, Sofa Chairs, and Decor: Buy Locally

Now let’s come to the part that changes the look of the studio: furniture, panels, chairs, curtains, carpet, props, and background.

This is where local sourcing can save serious money.

Do Not Blindly Buy Furniture From Ikea or Amazon

For sofa chairs, I would not blindly go for Ikea or Amazon. A sofa chair online can cost around ₹7,000, Ikea-style options can go around ₹10,000, and we bought similar chairs locally in Mumbai for around ₹4,000. The same applies to tables, rugs, curtains, wall panels, and props.

Online furniture looks easy. You see the product, click buy, and wait.

But studio furniture is different. Height matters. Camera angle matters. Chair size matters. Table width matters. Fabric reflection matters. Even the chair backrest matters because it can block or clutter the frame.

A ₹10,000 chair that looks good online may look oversized in a small podcast room. A ₹4,000 local chair may look perfect on camera.

Test physically where possible.

Local Vendors Are Better For

For wall panels, wooden panels, PVC panels, carpets, curtains, and background items, local sourcing is usually better. Online pricing often looks simple, but after calculating size, quantity, delivery, and installation, it becomes more expensive than expected.

Need a table of a specific height? Carpenter.

Need panels cut to exact wall size? Local market.

People confuse these two all the time.

Foam panels do not make a room soundproof. They mainly reduce echo. If your studio is near traffic, construction, or a noisy office, you need actual sound isolation.

This table is boring but necessary. These costs quietly enter the budget.

Let me say this directly: your first budget will be wrong.

You will forget some cable. You will need another stand. One light will need an adapter. A wall panel installer will charge extra. Delivery will cost more because the item is bulky. You will buy one more SSD because the editor needs files urgently.

This is normal.

Keep a buffer of at least 15 to 25 percent over your planned setup budget. If you think the studio will cost ₹5 lakh, mentally prepare for ₹6 lakh. If you think it will cost ₹10 lakh, keep room for ₹12 lakh.
